Woodland Stewardship Plans

Having a professionally written woodland stewardship plan is beneficial in many ways. Not only will it provide management options for each cover type on your land, but is also opens up your property to various tax incentives and the possibility to receive cost-share funding to implement healthy forest practices.

If you're not interested in the financial benefits of getting a WSP written for  your property, you still may find great value in having a WSP on hand to better understand what is in your woods and how to manage your forest resources to better meet your goals.

WSP's are natural resource management plans that are created using a landowner's management goals in the context of the landscape. By working with a certified plan writer, you will be given management recommendations to achieve any number of different goals including, but not limited to:

  • Game and wildlife habitat improvement
  • Support for recreation suitability (e.g., improving trails)
  • Invasive species removal
  • Timber harvesting opportunities
  • Soil loss prevention
  • Ecosystem support for improved water quality
  • Production of non-timber forest products (e.g., maple sap, walnuts, berries, birch bark)

If you own 20 acres of land or more in Kanabec County and are interested in having a WSP completed for your property, contact Kanabec SWCD or the DNR Division of Forestry (contact info below).
