Private Septic Systems and Drinking Water Safety

Septic Systems 101 [PDF]

A properly functioning septic system is essential for protecting both your family’s drinking water and the groundwater resources we all rely on. Private septic systems treat wastewater from homes, safely removing contaminants that could otherwise seep into the surrounding environment. However, if a system is outdated, damaged, or noncompliant with local standards, it may fail to adequately protect water sources, posing a serious threat to health and the environment. Leaking or poorly maintained septic systems can introduce harmful bacteria, nitrates, and chemicals into the groundwater, putting not only your household at risk but also your neighbors who depend on nearby wells.

Kanabec SWCD is committed to safeguarding our community’s drinking water by promoting the proper maintenance and upgrading of septic systems. We offer financial assistance to low-income households through our Septic System Assistance Program, which helps eligible homeowners repair, replace, or upgrade failing systems. By taking steps to ensure your system is functioning correctly, you’re contributing to the health and safety of your household and the entire community.

Groundwater Safety

Groundwater is one of Kanabec County’s most valuable natural resources, serving as the primary source of drinking water for our community. When septic systems fail, untreated wastewater can contaminate the groundwater with pollutants that are difficult to remove. This contamination can lead to costly health issues, environmental damage, and a decrease in the availability of clean water.

To address this, Kanabec SWCD works to protect groundwater through education, outreach, and direct support to our community. Our financial assistance program for septic system upgrades helps ensure that all households, regardless of income, can do their part to protect this vital resource. Together, we can maintain the integrity of our groundwater, ensuring safe and clean water for generations to come.
