Watershed Planning: What is a Watershed, and Why Do They Matter?

Kanabec SWCD's boundaries are the same as those of Kanabec County, but Kanabec County is actually comprised of three different watersheds that extend beyond its political boundaries:

A watershed is an area of land that drains all the streams and rainfall to a common outlet, and plans created through the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources' One Watershed, One Plan (1W1P) program are called comprehensive watershed management plans

The vision for One Watershed, One Plan (1W1P) is to create a local water plan on a major watershed boundary instead of traditional County boundaries. Together, we have a comprehensive plan to include prevention, restoration, protection, and preservation of our watershed.
