Livestock Exclusion: Protecting Water and Land

Grazing livestock near streams, rivers, and lakes can lead to significant water quality and erosion problems. Livestock exclusion is a conservation practice that helps protect sensitive areas from damage while supporting healthier pastures, cleaner water, and more resilient farms.

What Is Livestock Exclusion?

Livestock exclusion involves using fencing or other barriers to keep animals out of streams, wetlands, and other vulnerable areas. It may also include creating alternative access points for watering or installing designated crossings to protect streambanks from trampling.

Why It Matters

When animals have unrestricted access to water bodies, it can lead to:

  • Streambank erosion from trampling and loss of vegetation
  • Water pollution from manure and disturbed sediment
  • Reduced habitat for fish, frogs, and aquatic insects
  • Safety concerns for livestock and landowners

By keeping animals out of sensitive zones, landowners can:

  • Preserve valuable topsoil
  • Improve water quality on and off the property
  • Maintain healthier, more productive pastures
  • Reduce long-term infrastructure and land repair costs

What Can Be Funded

Through our Watershed-Based Implementation Funding (WBIF) grant, Kanabec SWCD offers cost-share assistance for livestock exclusion projects. Eligible practices may include:

  • Fencing to keep livestock out of waterways or wetlands
  • Alternate watering systems (e.g., pipeline and tanks)
  • Designated stream crossings or hardened access points
  • Vegetative buffers to restore damaged areas

How It Works

Our staff can walk your property with you to evaluate potential problem areas, identify conservation opportunities, and help design a solution that fits your operation. Cost-share funding can help offset the cost of materials and installation.
