Buffer Plantings: Natural Protection for Water and Soil
Buffer plantings are strips of deep-rooted native vegetation — such as grasses, flowers, shrubs, or trees — planted along shorelines, streams, rivers, ditches, and wetlands. These natural buffers serve as a protective zone between land use and water, filtering runoff and stabilizing the land.
Why Buffers Matter
Buffers are one of the simplest and most effective tools for improving water quality and preventing erosion. When rainwater runs off farm fields, lawns, or roads, it can carry sediment, nutrients, and pollutants into nearby lakes and streams. Buffers help by:
- Trapping sediment before it reaches the water
- Filtering nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen that fuel algae blooms
- Slowing runoff, giving water time to soak in
- Stabilizing streambanks and shorelines with deep-rooted plants
- Creating habitat for birds, pollinators, and other wildlife
Whether along a river, lake, field edge, or drainage ditch, buffer zones are a powerful conservation tool.
Types of Buffer Plantings
Depending on your goals and location, buffers can include:
- Native grasses and wildflowers – low-maintenance, pollinator-friendly, and effective at filtering runoff
- Shrubs and small trees – stabilize banks and improve wildlife habitat
- Custom mixes designed for wet or dry conditions, sun or shade
Our staff can help design a buffer that works with your land — whether it’s agricultural, residential, or natural space.
Cost-Share Assistance Available
Kanabec SWCD offers financial assistance through our WBIF grant for eligible buffer projects. We can help cover costs for:
- Site prep (e.g., herbicide or mowing)
- Seed or plant material
- Installation and maintenance planning
We work with landowners to create long-lasting buffers that are practical, attractive, and effective.
Let’s Get Started
Whether you're looking to meet buffer requirements, reduce runoff, protect a shoreline, or support pollinators, we’re here to help.
