District Land
Since 1995, Kanabec Soil and Water Conservation District has owned and managed 120 acres of land in Grass Lake township. Nicknamed “The Kanabec Conservation Farm,” the goal of this land is to demonstrate conservation agriculture and forestry practices. The land is open to the public and can be used for various education and recreation activities.
The land includes three fields that are being managed using healthy soil agriculture practices. In addition to these fields, the property also includes a wide variety of native forest cover types, including a tamarack bog, quaking aspen, and mixed hardwood stands which include oak, ash, maple, and basswood species. The remaining
acreage of this property is covered by an open grassy wetland.
